Goddess Durga Arrives With the New LG Nexus 5X

Durga Puja is a festival for which the Bengalis wait with much eagerness. In fact, the countdown for the next year begins as soon as the immersion of the idol on the Dashami day making an end to the festivity. The whole city of Kolkata goes through a makeover on the Puja days. This year, Durga Puja is just around the corner and, one can feel the spirit of the festival in every nook and corner of the city. The vibe is very much tangible.

According to the mythological stories, Goddess Durga was created by the combined energy of the Holy Trinity of the Hindu religion, Brahma-Vishnu-Maheshwar (Shiva) to defeat the demon Mahisasura. She is the ultimate incarnation of the sublime womanhood. Durga Durgotinashini (the eliminator of all sufferings) is worshiped by her devotees from Saptami to Dashami (four days) and, then the idol is immersed in water. The ritual is called “biswarjana”.

Most of the idols in Kolkata are made in Kumortuli, the potters’ hub. A large number of photographers thronged there to witness the potters at work and, to capture the making of Maa Durga through their lens. The place, having a network of serpentine lanes, is not at all spacious and, the photographic shenanigans are often inundated with complaints from the potter community at work. I admit that nothing made a greater subject of photography than watching those artisans at work, but still, generally I avoid the place during the pre-puja sessions.

However, last week, as I was passing through the Kumartuli Street, I couldn’t resist myself to sneak a bit. Just around the corner I observed some half-made idols and clicked a few times with my mobile.

kumortuliNow here comes the point. My mobile-camera works well in normal light. But at that time, the evening had already transcended and, the light was insufficient. The clicks didn’t satisfy me at all.

  6. I would have liked festival photos, but do remember your excellent past posts. The phone I have is called a Galaxy 5. I think it is challenging to use but young people figure it out quickly! 🙂
