Book Review : Protostar : The Star Crossed Saga # 1

1-51Qnu-59esL._SL500_AA300_Protostar : The Star Crossed Saga # 1 by Braxton A. Cosby is an innovative addition in the Young-Adult genre. It heralds the beginning of a sci-fi romance series which smoothly blends love and science. As the name suggests , there  is a ‘protostar’ in the story , a star in formation or a star-child. She is Sydney Elaine  , the female protagonist ,who has been sent to earth for some special purpose and possess enormous power. But she is all unknown to it and continues to live a normal , mundane life as an average in the small town of Madisonburg earthling till her seventeenth birthday . Then she meets William Derry , the prince of the formidable Fabricius who lands on this planet Earth of the Sol system with a mission to obliterate the star-child . Planet Fabricius , located hundreds of light years away , is ruled by the Derry family and young Prince William Derry has  been assigned with a task which , if  executed successfully , would  shower fame and heroism not only on the Prince but would also help to remove a stigma from the history of the revered royal family . According to the old legend a star-child  has the potential to become an absolute annihilator and her presence , therefore ,  is a throbbing  threat to the mighty kingdom . William should destroy her at any cost , by any means  and on failing the mission he would be banished from Fabricius. The internal affair of Fabricius , in the meantime , turns out to be at stake and it is almost on the verge of a Civil War where the Dagmas Clan is all set to tarnish the name of Derry dynasty. William , unaware of all these  , reached the Earth Planet on his space-shuttle Daedallus ( perhaps inspired by the Daedalus of the Greek mythology who was a clever worker and craftsman ) with the help of an amazing artificial intelligence IMPI . He settles himself in no time and is all set for fulfilling his consecrated  mission. William meets Sydney and from here the tension has been created wonderfully by the author . Braxton Cosby puts forth a question to the readers ,  a question which haunts us and puts us in a dilemma from time immemorial . Eternal emotion of love or irrefutable duty ?  What should be the preference ? Is really love that much powerful to refute all evil feelings from one’s mind ? William’s mind splits up as he meets Sydney , her charm and benevolence melts his mind and he finds himself at the crossroad of love and duty . He feels that love is an overwhelming, all-consuming power that can either build or break whatever it touches.  What the future has in store for him as he discovers and understand the feeling of love and being loved ?  What comeuppance is waiting for William and Sydney at the end ? Will they ever be able to avoid the imminent danger ? Braxton unfolds the story as  LOVE also becomes a character with Sydney saying ” Funny how neither space, distance, or time was sufficient to hinder the power of love. “ The author has a lucid style of story telling and he has avoided using bombastic words and ornamental language. The story moves on in a simple and sophisticated manner . The narrative style is smooth , it gives the reader a feeling of  sailing along with the current . However , I think there was much scope to  portray the characters in a more incisive way. The character of William’s father , King Gregorio Derry of the Torrian alliance should have been portrayed with better details . Same goes for Sarah , Sydney’s grandmother. However , the other side  characters like Lorraine , Jasmine , Henry , Noelle and Zelwyn have been given adequate space. The alongside love story of Sherrif and Jasmine though I find , a bit dragging . Their rendezvous and conversation have successfully provided that ‘extra’  fat to the body of the novel which consists of about 340 pages. The book has an open ending and readers are awaiting a sequel . I would like to know about the final fate of the modern #starcrossed version of Romeo and Juliet and waiting eagerly for Star Crossed Saga #2 . A nice , engaging  attempt from a debut author and is recommended for all who have an inclination either for Y/A romance or sci-fi .

From my side it’s 3.5/ 5
