Technology, it is said, always brings prosperity to humankind. From the day when the first wheel was invented till today when we are getting new and improved digital devices every month, if not daily, life indeed has become quite a smooth sail. Of course, there is another side to the coin. With the digital era, we have become accustomed to the sedentary lifestyle which invariably has given rise to several diseases. The most common is probably, gaining weight or worst, obesity. It’s not a disease in itself, but a symptom that we are getting vulnerable to a plethora of diseases if not taken care of.
Weight gain was never a problem for me. But, after spending ten years in the financial sector, where I’ve to sit all day long in front of the computer screen, gradually my weight reached an alarming digit last year. My work schedule was not quite suitable for working out in a gym. Instead, I started dieting and walking, mostly late in the evening. It was helping me definitely, but I needed something to keep track of my daily walk/jog, calorie intakes and calories burnt etc. It’s that time that I first searched for a smart device on the internet and after extensive research finally zeroed on to Fitbit Charge 2 Large. In an array of Smart Wearable devices, I found Fitbit Charge 2 the most impressive one at an absolutely affordable price. An avid internet-shopper as I am, after comparing the price on various popular e-commerce sites, I bought it from here availing a huge discount.
Fitbit has helped me as a faithful friend. The most useful feature, according to me, is that it tracks PurePulse Heart Rate. That is, it tracks your heart rate and calories that you burnt all the time. This is of utmost importance to me as I can keep a track of calorie intake Vs calorie burnt. The step count and auto sleep tracking features have helped me to get a comprehensive picture of my health and habits. Moreover, the Fitbit universe of users helps you to get connect with friends and take up fun challenges. Smart wearables are now an indispensable part of a healthy lifestyle. Technology has a solution for each and every problem of life!
Speaking of problems, every working mother is aware of the worry of leaving their kids at home under the supervision of elderly people or even maids. My son was just six-months-old when I had to join my office. My mom-in-law had frail health and, I had to appoint a maid to look after the baby. It was never-ending anxiety for me whether he was being taken care of properly by the maid. It was then when my husband and I thought of a home security camera. At that time (5 years ago) we had but a few choices. The system we availed was Realeye from Mova Systems. The CCTV camera was an okay type, picture quality was not good, especially when it’s dark. It worked for about two years, then something went wrong and, as my son was enough grown up by then to share his problems, we didn’t bother to have another system.
But, of late, I’m pondering again on installing a Smart Camera system.
The reasons are obvious. Firstly, the pervasive use of the internet has made us reveal a lot of personal information on different websites. A simple food or grocery order contains almost all personal details. It’s as easy as a child’s play now to get information about one’s address, phone number, what time they are inside or outside the house and other related details. Secondly, installing a smart camera system is not a big deal now. There’s plenty of choices within budget. The cams are now equipped to show us live feed on smartphones. My new year resolution is buying the Godrej Ace Home Security Camera. This motion-sensitive camera has powerful infra-red LED to capture clear pictures in complete darkness! After all, security comes first, be it my computer, smartphone or home.
A revolution is brewing in every sphere of our life. We have gone from an age when people used to consult a dictionary or an encyclopaedia, to an era when we have digital assistants to help us with our everyday task. Smart Home products like Google Home is there to act at our beck and call. One of my friends bought the product recently and Oh My God! was my reaction seeing it working in sync with all the other smart devices at her home. It acts like the Google Assistant we have on our smartphones and answers questions, plays music (Saavn and Gaana, the popular online streaming channels are integrated into it) and can be used for daily routines as lights on/off, alarms etc. You can also set “routines” that works in sync with your phone’s Google Assistant and that enables you to connect to your Google Home even when you are away.
One may think these high-end devices are not that much important to own. My opinion is, as we are on the threshold of a digital era, it’s high time that we should switch to Smart Home devices. They make life secure for the elderly and the kids. Voice-controlled Smart Lights can save the pain of switching on and off for the aged ones who often find it difficult to move upstairs or downstairs. One device can be connected with all the other of the smart category. We can monitor actions and movements even remotely and can be assured about the safety of our family. Let’s make technology by the people, of the people, for the people. Let’s lead a healthy life #GetFitWithFlipkart and start a #SmartHomeRevolution.

I find some of these devices scary, the ones that can be used as listening devices and such. I wonder if one day people will laugh at the time when we had to manually flick a switch to turn the lights on and off.

Haha…yes. I read a story about the future where the protagonist found a book in their old attic and wondered what the thing was! There might come such a day.

Enjoy all your new devices Mani. My granddaughter had a fitbit watch for Christmas from her parents. I am not so sure of all of the electronic waves of WiFi about. So I turn the modem off when not using the computer.. I also did a post of 5G in Dec, and we are moving very fast but not seeming to do enough research on health issues which are known to affect people.
But this world is progressing and we ‘oldies’ are catching up, but more cautious 🙂
Lovely to see a post in the reader as I wade down it this evening..
Love and Blessings and wishing you a Very Happy New Earth year.. Love and Hugs

Thanks, loads, Sue. Yes, the world is progressing really fast and it sometimes becomes a bit difficult to keep in pace with the change. Technology, when used in sync with nature, can make life blissful. Otherwise, it can be destructive.
Wish you a wonderful 2019 ahead, dear Sue ❤ hugs 🙂

I use Apple Watch. And wear it on right hand for being cool and now since someone said wearing on Left could affect the heart 😊

These sounds like amazing gadgets to add to your lifestyle, Mani. The Fitbit seems to be getting you to get up and move around more, and hopefully you get to live the healthy lifestyle that you want to live. So true that security cameras these days are sophisticated, and can be easily installed at home for the benefit of a pair of eyes on our house 24/7. These days so many things can be automated, especially as you alluded to with Google Home products. One can say they make us more lazy, but on the other hand they can also make our life easier. Have a wonderful year ahead, Mani 🙂

The Fitbit watch has really helped me! I can vouch for it. Technology is obviously making us lazy, it has also made us used to the sedentary lifestyle. But, it’s technology again that is helping us 😀 The vicious cycle of civilization, one can say.
Thank you and you too have a great 2019 ahead ❤

What you say is true, and you are young enough to be able to understand all this. Many elderly people over here are bemused and frustrated at the loss of personal contact and having to do everything on line.

This is so true. Some elderly people aren’t familiar with doing things online and find it daunting. I guess some of us prefer more one-on-one personal contact engagement, others just want more personal space and privacy.

True, Mabel. My parents think in the same way, they prefer real personal engagement rather than online. 🙂

Yes, I can fully understand. My parents don’t want to switch on to online shopping, accounting or digital payment. They find it quite a task. But one has to learn all these since the change is irreversible and inevitable.
