opulent décor
festivity in the house
chandeliers dazzle
even the darkest corners
sans her vague smile, forsaken
This is my second attempt to write a tanka, the first one was written more than a year ago, read it here.

Wow Maniparna.. Very beautiful Tanka.. I also have written some haikus and Tankas and I know how difficult is to fit the words by symbols in lines and give a meaning to them.. Loved the last line here.. Have a great day.. 🙂

Beautiful tanka, Maniparna. But I prefer haiku because it gives more rooms to reader. I see tanka as shortest renga written by a single poet. I think it would be more fun when it’s written by two poets as linked poetry. Just a thought 🙂

Thanks, Ravish, great to see you after a short break. Hope you’re doing well healthwise. 🙂
Yes, though I’ve never participated in writing a collaborative poem as renga, but it certainly is a good concept. Needs time though, which I lack…

As beautiful as sad ! Materialistic pleasures can not replace the genuineness of happiness from within – we know, but we fail to understand.
thank you for giving me such a deep thought written so well in this style 🙂

Yes, we are so engrossed with the materialistic world that we often forget what real happiness is….

Sadly, life does remind us about it – when it’s too late to get it back. I hope you don’t agree with it though 😀

Hehe..no, it’s true.. It’s difficult to get it back, but as an optimist I believe it’s never too late… 😛 😀

I like this a lot Maniparna 🙂 I always think that the most important thing in a room is the people. A room cannot be rich without joy. 🙂

That was the point behind the words. Money can’t buy most of the things, but not everything… 🙂
Thank you so much, Andy…

Beautiful thoughts. I suppose her smile would have lit up the room much better though, but we do seem to prefer opulence to joy at times.

I like the choice of words, which speak volumes…the beauty of this genre! The story within ‘the vague smile’ which never could be there is palpable.

Smiles can speak a lot. Every smile is not spontaneous and often there is pain hiding behind….
Thanks, Balroop, glad you liked the lines… 🙂

I don’t know much about tanka, but I loved the feelings ringing in it, in spite of the uneven syllables. The despondency in the presence of the opulence presents a stark contrast and increases the misery. A black dog looks darker in a herd of white sheep.
Very beautiful and introspective!

That was exactly the intention, to make her smile even more miserable in te midst of expensive decoration… 🙂 That’s why I created the contrast. And, often we have pain behind our smiles, something unsaid or unseen ..we have to wear masks… 🙂 .

Maniparna you have beautifully encapsulated the words “dazzle and the vague smile” and the expression depicted in the lovely face into tanka and it reflects the real emotions and true expression in its myriad hue and color…

Thank you, Nihar..sometimes a pain lurks behind a smile which even all the brightness and dazzle of the outside fails to hide…. 🙂

So profound, yes Maniparna we all keep smiling but behind the curtain lies so much of secrets and sadness, the person in front of us can never gauge and there are situations where even our own family members don’t know the pain behind our smiling face we keep showing…the mystery of life.
😀

True, the mystery of life or life is like that…we have to wear masks at times. All of us, no one is spared, so to say… 🙂

Yes, we all go though this different phases of life and we stage our different faces and different emotions, some are designed and many are just default…indeed no one can escape.

Get one more syllable in the first line and it'll be perfect!
LikeLiked by 2 people
Thanks, dear… there are five syllables in the first line, opulent has 3, op-u-lent and decor has 2, de-cor. That makes five. Have written it in the 5-7-5-7-7 format… 🙂
