Winter Nights

Winter nights, sharp and shrill
The owl hooted, nocturnal thrill
Winter nights, a plethora of thoughts
Nostalgia, black-grey memories are caught
Winter nights, when cold burns
Fiery emotions, dream churns.

  1. Its been long since I came across a poem with rhyming words. Well written Maniparna πŸ™‚
when cold burns, Fiery emotions, dream churns. Liked it

  2. loved the poem .. yeah ,I too love winter for all the reasons above comment has stated πŸ™‚ and more … can’t help reading πŸ˜›

Your lines, specially the second one paints a winter night image complete with warm quilt and cold cheeks…
to me ,’sharp and shrill’ portrayed the cold sharp winter night-wind making shrill sounds …
and the ‘memories caught, plethora of thoughts ‘ mirrored the time we (Mom and me ) had, when night used to settle early wirh no electricity so no tv,books, mobiles…,nothing to do and she used to knit in dark , sitting near me in bed .. while I used to lie down , ‘plethora of thoughts’ crossing my mind ……. simply feeling the cold .
So its a perfect picture , beautiful and nostalgic for me πŸ™‚

    • You’ve explained and weaved your thoughts so beautifully Kokila, and thereby have reminded me of those days too…load-shedding …those chilly and my sister gossiping under the quilt and Maa scolding us for being awake so late πŸ˜€
Thanks dear for such a lovely comment πŸ™‚ ❀

      • We seem two of a kind … nostalgic about even load shedding πŸ˜› but yes those were the days and your poem managed to send me there too along with other places πŸ™‚ So Thanks YOU my girl πŸ™‚

      • Hehe….load-shedding was a great excuse to get rid of the daily studies. Baba said, “no need to read or write in candle night…not healthy for your eyesight”…maa used to groan but was a joyous moment for us πŸ˜› πŸ˜€

  3. Beautiful words. Winter nights are very dark and deep. I remember college when I used to go out with friends on winter nights. It’s a bit scary too.

    Brace yourselves, winter’s here. (GOT)

  4. Winter nights, so cozy and of course the winter morning, the aroma of coffee/tea, every season has it’s charm but winter has its magic…the snow capped mountains, the snowfall, the variegated flowers at its cheerful best, there is warmth in the cold of winter, that is the mystical power of winter season…just love it.
Lovely thoughts and a nostalgic picture…

      • It was so magnetic, it called for such beautiful description…you deserve it.

Very interesting question, perhaps you have gone on my name or look, I suppose. By the way I am basically from Cuttack, Orissa moved across India and settled in Hyderabad…

For you information, what an irony, being so close to Kolkatta, only this year for the first time I visited Kolkatta for my Book Launch in International Book Fair…

    • πŸ˜€ Yes, I was intrigued by your name. Actually my father had a colleague with the same surname and he was from Nepal. πŸ™‚

Oh..really ! your book was published in the Kolkata International Book Fair ! that’s really great !! any idea to visit the upcoming book fair in 2015 ? I write regularly in a Bengali magazine and will be there at the publisher’s stall πŸ™‚
