Book Review : Between Boyfriends

12808569Between Boyfriends by Sarka-Jonae Miller falls in the Chick Lit genre and is quite recommendable .The protagonist,Jan Weston ,a twenty-one- old blonde has rich parents and she retains  a carefree attitude towards life as she needs not to bother about her finance. At the beginning it’s quite difficult to like this self-centered,pampered,crazy-about-boys,brat who has quite a snobbish attitude .But Sarka-Jonae Miller has not only delineated the typical problematic character but also somehow has showed the way to become victorious over these evil character traits . Jan is a very real character and the book is a journey of her transformation  from a silly, spoiled girl to a reasonable,ready-to-face-life woman.

Book Blurb :
At first glance, twenty-one-year-old Jan Weston has it all: a gorgeous boyfriend, fun friends, and wealthy parents who take care of all those pesky credit card bills. Then her boyfriend dumps her, her friendships fall apart, and her parents cut her off. Suddenly without money, without a man, and without a plan, it’s time for Jan to grow up. Determined to get her life back on track, Jan decides it’s time to make it on her own. Can she find her way as a single lady in San Diego? Can she fix her friendships, her job prospects, and her hair? And can she keep her vow that she’ll never date again, even after she meets a guy who just might be perfect for her? BETWEEN BOYFRIENDS is a sexy, hilarious story of living life, finding love, and growing up… but not necessarily in that order.

When dumped yet again by her boyfriend Mike, after the eight-month-old relationship, Jan becomes hysteric and finds it difficult to adjust with the changing colors of life.  After much weeping and alcohol she vows not to date any other man and wants to engage herself in studies ,gym and going out with her girl friends. But her friends Nichole  and Lisa make it clear that she really needs to stop her tantrums and must learn to use her logical and reasoning powers.Eventually, in a skirmish Nichole calls her a “whore” . She feels lonely, left out, dejected and the final blow comes when her mother disowns her and unlimited funding for her shopping,hairdresser,make-up,restaurants stops suddenly. The turning point comes here. Will she be able to survive alone ? Can she be able to achieve something to enhance her self-esteem?Will she cope with every bad turn that life is coming up with ?
Well, for a girl who has no emotional support ( forget the financial) from her family was difficult. But Between Boyfriends shows the way by which one can change her life . The process is slow but steady and of course very real. It doesn’t happen all of a magic coincidence like it does in many other books. Jan slowly regains her self-confidence and self-respect while learning a lot from life as it comes

The book is a pleasant read over the weekend,I liked the writing style and would be happy to read more from her.The only thing I think could be avoided because it becomes a tad boring , is the minute description of Jan’s problems , both social and psychological. Otherwise, on the whole, an interesting journey of the life of a girl with whom we can easily relate .

From my side its 4/5 .

  3. I do hope everyone enjoys my novel. Between Boyfriends is funny and breezy, but more than anything it’s about Jan’s transition from a spoiled brat to a self-sufficient woman. She has to learn about friendships and adult relationships… There is a big change, but like any big change it has to start with a flawed subject 🙂
